Pro-Talk!!! Questions Professionals Should Always Ask

Knowing how to blend and create a beautiful winged eye liner is great! But will it land you the right job not knowing about product ingredients or commonly used terminology in the industry.  You have to be able to talk like a pro and act like a pro.


Why? Well let me share with you a quick story.
In the beginning of my career when I started to work for a certain cosmetics company I used to be intimidated by a couple of artist who spoke so professional and very articulate. The words coming out of their mouth even convinced me to buy whatever it was that they where selling to their clients. DING! The light bulb went ON in my head. I said to myself- YOU KNOW ADRIAN, they are not the best makeup artist here, but what is it about them that captivated the client to want to come back time after time to see "them"? Ah-ha! It was simple- Product Knowledge! It was about educating the client that was so captivating and won the client to come to them time after time.


With that said- You really have to know your STUFF! Inside and out, backwards and upside down! Learn as much as you can and always ask if you don't know.


Below are a few questions you should get familiar with, because your clients will want to ask you the same thing!


FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: 


1. What does "HYPO-ALLERGENIC" mean?
Hypo-allergenic means that the product is less likely to produce an allergic reaction. You need to know that now these days most cosmetics have a LOW probability of causing an allergic reaction.


2. What does SPF mean?
SPF is an acronym for Sun Protection Factor which is a numerical ranking that refers to the amount of time it takes for the skin to become reactive to a sunburn. So if a product has 15 SPF means that the preparation when applied to the skin, may allow the user to be protected up to 15 times normal amount of time it would take them to burn with out no protection. In other words The SPF number tells you how long you can stay in the sun before getting burned. If you normally start to burn after 15 minutes of sun exposure, an SPF 15 product will let you stay in the sun for approximately 15 times longer (or 3 1/2 hours) without burning.




To ensure protection from UVA rays your sunscreen should be labeled “Broad Spectrum” and contain at least one of these ingredients: Avobenzone (also known as Parsol 1789 or butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane)
Titanium dioxide, Zinc oxide, Anthelios SX, Helioplex (Is the Neutrogena blend of Avobenzone and Oxybenzone), Outside the United States, Mexoryl SX and Tinosorb are also used.

15 + 15 does not equal 30 – Layering SPF products does not increase the total number or the effectiveness.




3. What is the difference between a SUNSCREEN AND A SUNBLOCK?
A sunscreen is an active ingredient that absorbs 85% of the UVB wavelengths (290 -320 nm) example: Octyl Methoxycinnamate.
A sunblock is an opaque sunscreen ingredient that reflects or refracts ALL wavelengths of light in the UV and visible range. for example: Titanium Dioxide


4. What does OIL FREE mean?
Oil Free means free from oil, mainly free from lanolin oil. However, most foundations and concealers and other liquids/creams contain natural oils such as jajoba or orange oil as a emollient to prevent water loss.


5. What does NON-COMEDOGENIC mean?
Means that that particular product will not clod pores.


6. Why do some products use ALCOHOL in them?
Alcohol can be beneficial on a skin care product. Ethyl Alcohol is commonly used as a toning and cleansing agent in some products. It effectively tones and cleanses oily to normal skin, then evaporates leaving no residue behind. Alcohol can also be used as a solubilizer in some products.


7. What are ACTIVE INGREDIENTS?
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) defines an active ingredient as a category 1 ingredient which is utilized all over the counter (OTC) drugs and is safe and effective at the amount specified for use.
When you turn the product on its back side, you see a list of ingredients. The 2-4 FIRST ingredients are the most commonly used ingredients of that particular product.


8. Can cosmetics cause acne?

Some skin and hair care products can cause acne. To help prevent and control acne flare-ups, take good care of your skin. For example, use a mild soap or cleanser to gently wash your face twice a day. Choose “non-comedogenic” make-up and hair care products. This means that they don't close up the pores.

9. Are cosmetic products with alpha hydroxy acids safe?
Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) come from fruit and milk sugars. They are found in many creams and lotions. Many people buy products with AHAs, because they claim to reduce wrinkles, spots, sun-damaged skin, and other signs of aging. Some studies suggest they may work.
But are these products safe? FDA has received reports of reactions in people using AHA products. Their complaints include:
  • severe redness
  • swelling (especially in the area of the eyes)
  • burning
  • blistering
  • bleeding
  • rash
  • itching
  • skin discoloration
AHAs may also increase your skin's risk of sunburn.
To find out if a product contains an AHA, look on the list of ingredients. By law, all cosmetics have ingredients on their outer label. AHAs may be called other names, like glycolic acid and lactic acid.

10. What are “cosmeceuticals?”
Some products can be both cosmetics and drugs. This may happen when a product has two uses. For example, a shampoo is a cosmetic because it's used to clean the hair. But, an anti-dandruff treatment is a drug because it's used to treat dandruff. So an antidandruff shampoo is both a cosmetic and a drug. Other examples are:
  • toothpastes that contain fluoride
  • deodorants that are also antiperspirants
  • moisturizers and make-up that provide sun protection




11. How long do cosmetics last?

You may not be able to use eye make-up, such as mascara, eyeliner, and eye shadow for as long as other products. This is because of the risk of eye infection. Some experts recommend replacing mascara three months after purchase. If mascara becomes dry, throw it away. Don't add water or, even worse, saliva to moisten it. That will bring bacteria into the product.
You may also need to watch certain "all natural" products that contain substances taken from plants. These products may be more at risk for bacteria. Since these products contain no preservatives or have non-traditional ones, your risk of infection may be greater.
If you don't store these products as directed, they may expire before the expiration date. For example, cosmetics stored in high heat may go bad faster than the expiration date. On the other hand, products stored the way they should be can be safely used until they expire.

12. What's in cosmetics?
Fragrances and preservatives are the main ingredients in cosmetics. Fragrances are the most common cause of skin problems. More than 5,000 different kinds are used in products. Products marked “fragrance-free” or “without perfume” means that no fragrances have been added to make the product smell good.
Preservatives in cosmetics are the second most common cause of skin problems. They prevent bacteria and fungus from growing in the product and protect products from damage caused by air or light. But preservatives can also cause the skin to become irritated and infected. Some examples of preservatives are:
  • paraben
  • imidazolidinyl urea
  • Quaternium-15
  • DMDM hydantoin
  • phenoxyethanol
  • formaldehyde
The ingredients below cannot be used, or their use is limited, in cosmetics. They may cause cancer or other serious health problems.
  • bithionol
  • mercury compounds
  • vinyl chloride
  • halogenated salicyanilides
  • zirconium complexes in aerosol sprays
  • chloroform
  • methylene chloride
  • chlorofluorocarbon propellants
  • hexachlorophene

Professional Industry ETIQUETTE

Working in this industry for over 15 years, I HAVE REALLY SEEN IT ALL... The good, the bad, and the ugly!

Most artistry professionals working in the industry who 'have made it" know one secret.  ITS letting go of their EGO and not taking anything too personal. After all, we are,  at the end of the day just a GLORIFIED  SERVICE PROVIDER AFTER ALL. We are hired to service the client, not your ego.

Below I have outlined a few examples of Positive & Negative Behaviors that you need to take into account, YOU and only YOU are responsible for the energy that you bring into YOUR work environment, so take full responsibility for the energy you put out, and also take in internally.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR
The following behaviours are to be used at all times when representing yourself

-Active listening: Show respect by listening. Make your client feel valued and understood.
-Being Adaptable: Adapt your style and personality to make your client feel comfortable.
-Being Assertive: Be willing to take initiative and assist the client on anything, even if its not your specialty.
-Using Positive Body Language: Show a positive attitude with an open and welcoming body language.
-Being Cheerful: Even if your not, FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT! Smile, be friendly and inviting. Give the service you would want to receive. Think 5 star!
-Acting Confidant: Be confidant and self assured even in ever eye movement you make. Maintain a friendly eye contact.
-Being Consistent: Every client should be treated the same. Act as is he/she is your first client and is spending 1 million dollars on your services. (ACT)
-Using Diplomacy: Be tactful and diplomatic. If you choose your words carefully, you will always say and do the right thing. Think before you speak, you don't have to be in a rush to give the correct answer.
-Being Emotionally Stable: Practice self-control. Learn to suppress unpleasant emotions.
-Being Honest: Be honest and sincere. People will always smell a fake!
-Being Professional: Create a positive image. Look, act and speak professional.
-Being Objective: When you are problem solving be unbiased and non-judgmental to your clients and coworkers.
-Being Optimistic: Be hopeful. EXPECT the best in all situations
-Being Polite: Be thoughtful and courteous. Treat others as you would like to be treated. YOU MOTHER WAS RIGHT SEE! -Always say PLEASE & THANK YOU!
-Having A Positive Attitude: A positive attitude lets your client know that you are approachable and pleased to assist them.


NEGATIVE BEHAVIOURS
The following behaviours are to be AVOIDED at all times.

-Arguing: Never start an argument with others.
-Being Dishonest: Don't lie about anything, Don't make false claims or promises.
-Gossiping: Its just disgusting and very unprofessional conduct. Looked down upon in this industry.
-Being Greedy: Never service the client with just money in mind.
-Using Inappropriate Language: Don't use profanity or slang. Any conversation should be appropriate and friendly.
-Being Apathetic: Don't be indifferent. The client may thing that you are not interested. This could result in frustration and animosity.
-Being Intimidating: Never ACT SUPERIOR to the client.
-Talking About Personal Problems: Don't bring them to work. It may be disruptive and bad for client and  co-worker relations.
-Being Sarcastic: Don't ridicule or use sarcastic remarks about other products, other professionals, services, other clients, or anything or anyone.


5 PROFESSIONAL WAYS TO MANAGE AND TAKE CONTROL! 


Customers Who Challenge:  Usually a client's concerns have nothing to do with you or your service. Stay clam and don't mirror their distress. The key is to understand why he/she has become upset. This will enable you to deal with his/her concerns accordingly.

Why Do Clients Become Upset- They felt like they were not listened to, they were ignored, someone was rude to them, someone was insensitive to them, they expect more, they did not receive enough attention.

Managing A Challenging Client: 1) Stay Calm- don't take anything personal. 2) Control your emotions. 3) Listen to the real want and need of your client. Investigate that! 4) Show them that you understand. 5) Show them genuine act of wanting to help them and wanting to help then resolve the problem.

Listen- Let the client vent (voice) her/his frustration, feelings, mood, and all sorts of emotions. Don't interrupt her/his venting, just keep still, clam, and collected and be respectful. Then, politely repeat and verify what the client has said. "Ok, so you would like such and such, great, I will be happy to that for you". SMILE and GET TO WORK with a positive attitude. -You have the power to turn an ugly situation into a beautiful experience.

PROBLEM/ SOLUTION = THE ONLY WAY TO THINK! 
When there is a problem, immediately think of possible solutions. Offer the client several alternatives and ask him/her to choose one. Let them be part of the decision making.
Offer an explanation, NOT AN EXCUSE.
Try to anticipate any problems or misunderstandings before they arise. BE CLEAR so that the communication is effective, and the problem is resolved.

REMEMBER TO SEE IT, HEAR IT, AND FEEL IT LIKE THE CLIENT


TELEPHONE ETIQUETTE 101

1. When making calls, always be prepared to ask for what you want. GET TO THE POINT! I suggest that you have a calendar, pen, and paper ready in order to have a productive and successful phone conversation.
2. Remember to smile- It really is an important emotion which can be sent through the phone. Its an instant force of energy which can positively change the tone of the conversation and the outcome!
3. Watch your tone of voice- reflect a positive attitude!

5. Speak SLOWLY so that the caller can understand you.
6. Be polite, courteous words such as please, "excuse me", "pardon me", and "thank you"
7. Be consistent- If your client or a decision maker asks you to call back on a certain day & time, respectfully call on that exact date & time, remind them that they had asked you to call them on that particular date & time. Don't forget to call back
8.Always hang up last, let your caller hang up first!
9. You will loose the caller's respect if you do not follow through with your commitment.
10. Never let the caller wait on HOLD for more than 30 seconds.



These, ladies & gentlemen are some golden rules of success and proper etiquette in our industry. The above points have been taught to be while working for MAC COSMETICS, and some I learned ALL BY MYSELF. Mostly out of experiencing these things myself. Most importantly is to pay attention and follow these rules in your every day to day business (especially if you are a free-lance makeup artist).

The Bridal Industry has always been to me an avenue that brings me constant business. Most of my clients now come to me from a referral and word of mouth. That doesn't stop me from   marketing myself to clients in that particular industry, my approach to brides is way different than any other part of the industry. My ultimate goal is to be the ultimate service provider, and make her feel and look beautiful (in her own way). As an artist, we should feel amazing taking part in a woman's most important day on her life. 

5 Tips to a successful bridal business 

  1. Market yourself towards the bridal industry: Close attention to your business cards, website, service menu, and your email signature is very important. Have images that relate to this special business. 
  2. Knowing everything & everyone in this business only makes you more marketable. Making connections and making yourself to wedding coordinators, wedding stylist, hair dressers, and many more industry related people can bring you more business. Let people know who you are and what you do! 
  3. Your Bridal Portfolio- If communication is your weakness, then the best thing for you to carry along with you other than your makeup kit is a book of references. 
  4. Bridal Contract: It is important for you to follow strict professional business practices so that your clients take you serious and know what they are signing up to. As a independent contractor you will need to have your own Bridal Contract. I will have a link of an example for you to review. This is also great because it sets high expectations and clear communication. 
  5. Let your clients know how much they mean to you and your business. One of the best things to do is to write hand written thank you cards, not emails to your clients. This takes your image to a whole new level.

    The artist will stay for up to 4 hours to maintain consistency throughout the wedding. Assuring that makeup for photographs and ceremonies are kept beautiful and perfected. 
Additional Makeup Services 
  • Customized Lashes - $20.00 (Individual or Strip) - This is a undetectable lash application that is artistically cut to fir your eyes. Using hand made natural hair and water proof to last all night.
     
  • Tattoo Coverage - Starting at $15.00 up to $30.00 each and depending on the tattoo's size and color. Coverage is waterproof and non-transfer resistant. 
  • Body Tanning (Air Brush) - $175.00 *Does not streak, smell, and dries with in 7 minutes. Color will show in 1 day. This application is only available 3 Days prior to wedding day.  NO EXCEPTIONS. 
  • Groom's grooming - $100.00. This is a no makeup look that ensures picture perfect skin, and facial hair grooming. 30 minutes is required for the groom. 
  • Body Washing- $50.00 - A light weight makeup application to the décolletage, arms, and back (where exposed) to cover redness, pimples, and discoloration. 
TOP 5 Bridal Tips to communicate with your brides. 
  1. Never TAN on the day of your wedding! Tanning should be a natural and gradual service that usually starts up to 2 1/2  weeks prior to the Wedding date. 
  2. DON’T go for FACIALS days before the wedding! Although facials are great, you can really bring out acne congestion from with in the skin and wake up with pimples on the day of the wedding. Try to work with your Aesthetician weeks before your wedding. 
  3. Don’t try a new skin care regime, you don’t know if you might have an allergic reaction on the products and experimenting is not ideal! 
  4. Don’t try a new hair cut or hair color. ITS A CHEMICAL disaster waiting to happen! Consult your hair stylist weeks before the wedding, 
  5. DO eat plenty of healthy foods that can benefit the skin! Like Salmon, grains, and fruit!

Natural: Natural makeup is soft, beautiful, and balanced. Yet it needs to be strong enough for pictures. This does not necisarilly mean more foundation, but subtle contouring and defining the eyes.

Managing Your Makeup Career in Film or TV



The Film and TV makeup industry is a totally different vibe than runway, bridal, or photo shoot experiences.
Filming on set can be a long day with lots of waiting and checking consistency of makeup and lots of craft services (my favorite). I always joke that you can earn a secondary degree online while you wait for filming.

Most artist beginning their career in this industry getting unpaid jobs doing makeup/hair for student films, which is a great way to jump start your career! Most film students move on to paid jobs so making strong connections is very important, they tend to take people  with them to the top whom helped them when they where just beginning. - Classic story! It always happens! Trust me!


What you need to know and be aware of about this industry:

  • The Makeup Union 
  • Working on set
  • Who to know and why
  • What to do when arriving on set 
  • Understanding paperwork - Getting paid 
  • How TV makeup differs from print makeup
  • On Set etiquette 


Getting the job:
  1. You will need to call or go to your local Film School or Academy and get the name of students currently doing student films projects.
  2. Make sure you ask open ended questions in order to fulfill the requirements of the job. i.e makeup looks, how many actors, female or male ratio, what type of theme or style the makeup will be done, who will be the hair dresser, will there different locations to shoot at? etc. 
  3. Your Makeup kit will need to be cleaned and organized in order to produce great clean work. 
  4. Your tools of the trade must be fully stocked. i.e. q-tips, cotton rounds etc.
  5. Attention you details when it comes to scheduling is imperative. Start by adding reminders on your schedule. 
  6. Make sure you update your phone and email message to represent a professional etiquette. 

On Set, You Observe and learn! 

Come to the set to know where everyone and everything is positioned.  Note where the camera/ actor/ talent/ director are all located. This is crucial for you to know. Decide where the best place for you to be or NOT TO BE. 

On Set Etiquette: Silence IS GOLDEN! 
A makeup artist/hair dresser should always be SEEN working, not talking and especially not gossiping! Let people see you not hear you. If you are at a level 12 and everyone is chillen at a level 6, bring it down a couple of levels. 

Find out what kind of shot will take place. (close up/ medium/ wide shot) Know your lenses. If you don't ask the camera guy. He will be a great asset to you! 

Always direct your questions to the 1st AD (Assistant Director) 
Know who's who so they can assist you.

Know and understand your lighting with makeup- this will let you know how much or little is required.
The monitor is your friend, keep a close eye on the screen and check in detail all features (eyes, lips, foundation, powder, consistency, balance and such). 

Keep a loaded ON SET bag with quick touch up makeup supplies ready. This prevents you waisting time going back and fourth.

  1. Many people try to do everything on their own. Either they feel uncomfortable using their connections, or they don't know them well enough to ask for a favor. BIG MISTAKE! 
  2. Universal Truth of connecting, Its not who YOU know, its who knows YOU!- put yourself in the market as someone of value, create the law of attraction!
  3. Be friendly, open, and shine! Friendly breeds likability and trust. People do real business with people they trust. Smile, people who smile are 100 times more attractive than people who don't.
  4. Protect your self image in a way that breeds confidence in others. A firm handshake with a smile,  connecting and having eye contact. 
  5. Have a POSITIVE attitude and outlook. Positive attitudes will breed positive responses and positive results. 
  6. Take a genuine interest in people before you can ask them to take a genuine interest in you
  7. Provide Value in order to build a solid connection, there must be a value connected to the exchange. One-sided connections are SHORT LIVED. 
  8. Joining organizations is not an option, its an imperative is you seek powerful connections. 
  9. If you SCHMOOZE, YOU LOOSE.- its idle talk, gossip chatter, and meaningless dialogue.
  10. Staying in touch. Communicate value to every connection, every week!
